SC Collegium recommends elevation of Bombay HC CJ Dipankar Dutta as Supreme Court judge

Bombay HC CJ Dipankar Dutta: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of Bombay High Court Chief Justice Dipankar Dutta as a Supreme Court judge. According to a statement uploaded on the website of the Supreme Court, the collegium met under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit on Monday.

The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on September 26, 2022, has recommended the elevation of Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Dipankar Dutta as a judge of the Supreme Court, the statement said. On 22 June 2006, Justice Datta was appointed as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court bench. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court on 28 April 2020.

Out of 34 sanctioned posts of judges in SC, 5 posts are vacant. With the appointment of Justice Datta, the total number of judges will increase to 30. Currently, the Chief Justice of Mumbai is from the Calcutta High Court.
