Washington. The US space agency NASA is now preparing its giant New Moon rocket for its maiden flight. Known as the Space Launch System (SLS), the rocket is being towed to Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for its scheduled flight on Aug. This will be a debut outing test with no crew, but NASA will use this plane to send astronauts back to the Moon in future missions.

The vehicle being tested to bring this massive 100-metre-long rocket to the launching pad is traveling its distance at just one kilometer per hour. According to a BBC report, this 6.7 km (4.2 mi) journey may take 8-10 hours to complete. According to NASA, its large size helps it generate large amounts of energy. The SLS produces 15 percent more thrust than Apollo’s Saturn V rocket. This additional thrust would not only help send astronauts away from Earth, but in addition, more equipment and cargo crew would be able to stay away from Earth for longer.

Its crew capsule is also a step up in capability. The capsule, called Orion, is much larger than the historic command module of the 1960s and 70s, which is wider. NASA has said that through this mission they will land the first woman on the moon. The space agency further said that once SLS reaches its launch pad, engineers will have just a week and a half to prepare. NASA has set August 29 as the date for the test flight. It has also been put on standby on 2nd September and 6th September.

heat tolerance test
The rocket will orbit the Moon and re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, where it will crash into the Pacific Ocean off California. Through this test, NASA will also examine the effect on the heat shield after the rocket enters the Earth’s atmosphere. After passing the test, NASA will start preparing for its mission to the moon.

European countries include
More than ten European countries are also involved in this mission with NASA. In this mission of NASA, Europe is working on the propulsion module of the rocket, which will help to lift the rocket. Sean Cleaver of aerospace manufacturer Airbus told the BBC that there are more than 10 European countries working with the European Space Agency. The module that the European Space Agency is working on will help the rocket reach the moon.
