Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil’s ideology was that there should be no village without a school and there should be no school without a trained teacher. As a pre-requisite for the spread of primary education in the Satara district, they needed to produce suitable teachers. In 1921, at a conference of primary teachers of the Bahujan Samaj held at Angpur in Satara district, Bhaurao announced that he would start a training college at Satara. These promises were fulfilled in the year 1935. In that year Ryotted Education Institute was registered. The banyan tree was made a symbol of the institution. In 1935, Bhaurao started a training college named ‘Silver Jubilee Rural Training College’ at Satara. That is today’s Mahatma Phule Teacher’s School. It was the first training college in the state to be started by a private educational institution for this purpose. She started Jijamata Shikshak Vidyalaya in Satara in 1942 for the training of women teachers.

Mahatma Gandhi praised it

In 1924 Ryot Education Institute was shifted from Kale to Satara city. A mixed hostel was started here for students of all castes. This hostel was named ‘Shri Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Boarding House’ by Mahatma Gandhi in 1927. Seeing that here children of all castes eat together, work and study together, Gandhi appreciated them. From 1933 onwards, the hostel was given an annual assistance of Rs 500 by Gandhiji’s Harijan-Sevak Sangh.
