Many dead in suicide attack in Kabul | Current Asia | DW

A suicide attack in the Afghan capital Kabul has killed at least 19 people and wounded many more, police said. A massive explosion shook an educational facility in the Dashte Barchit district, which is mostly Hazara residents. The attack was carried out during a university entrance exam, police said. Both boys and girls are among the victims.

So far, no one has confessed to the crime. However, the Hazara – a Shia ethnic minority that makes up 10 to 20 percent of the 38 million Afghans – have been targeted several times by the radical Islamic terro-militia “Islamic State” (IS). The district of Dashte Barchit, located in western Kabul, has repeatedly been the target of bloody attacks.

targets of hate

The Sunni IS considers not only so-called infidels, but also representatives of other branches of the Islamic faith as enemies that need to be fought. Even after the Taliban, who were also radical Islamists but deobandist, took power in August 2021, IS repeatedly carried out serious attacks in Afghanistan. The Taliban have closed schools for girls from the seventh grade. However, private educational institutions offer older girls the opportunity to continue their education.
