Educated at Sir JJ School of Art
Dhundiraj Govind Phalke alias Dadasaheb Phalke was born on 30 April 1870 in Trimbakeshwar. After completing his schooling in 1885, Dadasaheb Phalke joined the Sir JJ School of Art. After this he went to Baroda to study sculpture, photography etc.

Watched a short film and started filming
After watching the short film “Life of Christ”, Dadasaheb became interested in filmmaking. After this he produced Raja Harishchandra, the first film of english and Indian cinema. The set of this film was made in Dadar. It was first performed on 3 May 1913 at the Coronation Theater in Bombay. Dadasaheb Phalke’s wife Saraswatibai also supported him in making the film.

The film Raja Harishchandra was only 20 minutes long but Dadasaheb had to face many difficulties during the making of this film. At that time, Dadasaheb Phalke had taken a loan to buy the necessary technical equipment for film production, which was very expensive. Dadasaheb Phalke had also sold his wife’s jewelry due to financial constraints.

Named after Dadasaheb Phalke, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest award in Indian cinema. This award was started from 1969. This award is given by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. A film has also been made on Dadasaheb Phalke. The name of that movie is Harishchandra’s Factory. The film depicts the life journey of Dadasaheb Phalke.
