iPhone 14 leaks and rumors: Everything we know ahead of Apple’s upcoming ‘Far Out’ event

iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max Unified Pill-Shaped Cutout Could Display Privacy Indicators: Report

The iPhone 14 series — which reportedly includes the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max — is expected to debut at Apple’s ‘Far Out’ launch event on September 7. Away from the ‘mini’ form factor, in favor of the larger ‘max’ model. The iPhone 14 lineup is tipped to feature a higher price tag this year compared to its predecessors launched last year. Apple is also said to be working on three new Apple Watch Series 8 models, which could launch alongside the iPhone 14 lineup.

On this week’s episode of the Gadgets 360 podcast Orbital, host Akhil Arora talks to Executive Editor Jamshed Awari and Senior Critic Ali Pardiwala. We discuss some of the most notable leaks regarding the iPhone 14 models and the alleged Apple Watch Series 8 lineup.

Apple is tipped to launch the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max next week with redesigned pill and hole punch cutouts replacing the display notch that houses the camera and sensor for Face ID. This will be the first time Apple has made a major change to the notch since it was introduced with the iPhone X in 2017, although the company reduced the size of the notch with the iPhone 13 lineup.

This year, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature a 48-megapixel primary camera. As Jamshed points out, Android manufacturers have used pixel binning, which uses clusters of four or more pixels together to improve overall picture quality, for years, while also demanding higher numbers for marketing. Whether Apple allows users to choose from a higher resolution mode or whether it will be set as the default remains to be seen.

Will the iPhone 14 series offer 8K video recording? Previous leaks have suggested that ultra-high-resolution video recording could be supported on the smartphone. Ali noted that TVs with support for content in 8K resolution have existed since at least 2016, though it has yet to go mainstream and 4K TVs are the most popular. Jamshed says there will always be a market for 8K video recording as a feature, enabling cropping, remastering and archiving of content.

Apple is also rumored to launch the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max with the A15 Bionic chip launched with last year’s models, while the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max could feature its next-generation A16 Bionic chip. According to Jamshed, the chip’s current shortage, coupled with rising costs, could make sense for such a decision.

The Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to launch in three different models, including a new Pro variant, according to previous reports. As per previous reports, we may see a new sports focused variant this year. Apple is also rumored to be working on satellite calling support, but we haven’t really seen evidence of such a feature coming to the next generation of Apple wearables, as Ali mentioned. It’s said to be significantly more expensive than previous watches, but we’ll only know for sure when Apple gives us details next week.
