In the notification issued by the government on September 26, the IMEI number of all mobile handsets sold in India will have to be registered on its anti-counterfeiting portal.

Where to register mobile IMEI number?

The Telecom Ministry has issued a notification in this regard on 26 September. Accordingly, from January 1, all mobile phones imported and manufactured in India will have to enter the IMEI number on the Indian Counterfeit Equipment Portal of the Department of Telecommunications. After this the customer will get his certificate.

What’s the new order?

According to a new order by the Department of Telecommunications, mobile manufacturers and retailers will have to register the IMEI numbers of all mobile phones manufactured in India on the anti-counterfeiting equipment portal. This notification has been issued under the Prevention of Tampering with Mobile Device Identification Number (Amendment) Rules, 2022. Every mobile phone has a 15 digit IMEI number.

What is IMEI Number?

Every mobile phone has an International Mobile Equipment Identity Number (IMEI number) for mobile identification. The IMEI number is of 15 digits. This number is used as the identification of the mobile. You can trace the location of the mobile with the IMEI number. Every mobile’s IMEI number is different. But at present there are many fake mobile phones available in the market. Along with this, cases of mobile phone tampering, hacking or mobile theft also come to the fore. But because of the fake IMEI number it becomes difficult to find the mobile. Therefore, the Department of Telecom has implemented this new rule.

The central government has implemented this new rule to curb mobile-related crimes. Entering the IMEI number will help the central government to block lost or stolen phones. At present, it has been found that mobile phones are being misused in many incidents. This amount is increasing day by day. That is why the central government has taken this important step.
