According to a report, Google Pixel smartphones may be assembled in India in the future. Apparently, Google has sought bids from manufacturers in India to make up a portion of the company’s estimated annual production of Pixel smartphones. Google is considering moving Pixel phone assembly out of China due to the country’s COVID-19 lockdown, which has hit production and supply chains. Another reason for this shift in manufacturing is the growing geopolitical tension between China and the US. After Apple, Google has become the second major company to look to India as an alternative manufacturing hub.
A Report through information (via Reuters) A person with direct knowledge of the discussions was quoted as saying that Google has sought bids from manufacturers in India to make 5,00,000 to 1 million Pixel smartphones. These figures represent 10 percent to 20 percent of Google’s estimated annual production of Pixel smartphones.
Reasons for moving some production of Pixel smartphones out of China include the country’s Covid-19 lockdown that has disrupted production and supply chains, and rising geopolitical tensions with the US following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan earlier this year. .
Google does not know which model of Pixel smartphones it plans to assemble in India. The last flagship that Google sold in India was the Pixel 3 series of smartphones. Google dropped the Pixel 4 series but introduced the mid-ranger Pixel 4a, dropped the Pixel 5 series as well as the Pixel 5a and skipped the flagship Pixel 6 series altogether to launch only the premium Pixel 6a in the country. The company is set to launch the Pixel 7 series on October 6.
After Apple, Google has become the second major manufacturer to consider moving part of its smartphone production to India. The Cupertino company plans to use the country’s production line to supplement iPhone 14 production in China amid economic activity disrupted by geopolitical issues and the country’s COVID-19 restrictions.
