All that is missing, to give a little more salt to the situation of the current Keeper of the Seals, is his trial before the Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR) for “illegal taking of interests”, which was served on Monday, ends with a prison sentence (the offense is punishable by five years in prison and a fine of 500,000 euros). Emmanuel Macron, when he reappointed Eric Dupond-Moretti to the prestigious ministry of Place Vendôme last May, having clearly shown that he would support him to the end against what, seen from the Elysée, looks like a vindictive magistrates with regard to a lawyer accustomed to treating them with loftiness, it would not be totally excluded, even if it is highly improbable, to attend the sending of a Minister of Justice to the jails! Obviously, there is still a long way to go, and some procedural resources for the great criminal lawyer, to defend himself and demonstrate his innocence, or his good faith, in this so-called “fadaites” affair, but which in many ways would have deserved to be call it a “case of nonsense”. Too bad in any case, that this unprecedented conflict between the minister and his administration eclipses the efforts made to finally modernize our Justice, which really needs it, and spoils the beautiful symbol of seeing the son of a metalworker and a woman housekeeper, orphan of a father at 4 years old, to be in charge of one of the most prestigious royal functions of the State. Nicknamed “Acquittator”, lawyer Dupond-Moretti had 145 acquittals to his account when he was appointed. What will happen when he cannot appeal to himself?
