In the 1970s, IIT Bombay gold medalist Kumar Shiralkar quit his job and dedicated his life to fighting against the injustice done by landlords to the tribals of the erstwhile Shahada taluka of Dhule district. He participated in the struggle under the leadership of Amber Singh Maharaj. He, along with many of his middle-class, educated comrades, formed a tribal labor organization. He was also a member of the revolutionary group ‘Magowa’. In the tribal struggle in Nandurbar they also faced the attacks of the landlords. After this successful battle some of his companions returned to the city. However, Shiralkar settled in Nandurbar. He joined the Marxist Communist Party in 1982. He was active in the All India Agricultural Workers’ Union affiliated to the CPI(M). He served as the state general secretary and later as the national joint secretary of this organization. Shiralkar participated in Dalit Panther movement, Marathwada University name change movement. He was imprisoned during the Namantar movement.

Shiralkar traveled all over India to draft the Forest Rights Act, which gave tribal rights to the land acquired by him, and made great achievements in the implementation of that act.

Although Shiralkar was active in the movement, he was also known as a Marxist thinker who wrote and thought very well. Marx, Buddha, Mahatma Phule, Dr. His intellectual body was nurtured on the ideology of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Kumar Shiralkar wrote pamphlets presenting the problems of tribals, farm labourers, sugarcane workers, dalits etc. His book ‘Uth Vedya, Tod Bedya’ published in 1974 was famous. Taking inspiration from Shiralkar’s works, youth activists were formed in rural areas. Shiralkar wrote on various subjects like caste war, sugar industry in Maharashtra, issues of sugarcane farming and sugarcane workers, justification of Forest Rights Act, life of tribals, National Employment Guarantee Act and politics of charity. His autobiography ‘Navi Jag, Navi Tagamag’ was published a few years back.
