The behind the scenes trailer of ‘Chakda’ Express is out recently. On Monday, at an event in Mumbai, Netflix unveiled the new look of the upcoming Anushka Sharma-led sports biopic. The film dramatizes the story of former Indian cricket team captain Jhulan Goswami, who was instrumental in bringing fame and recognition to women’s cricket for a long time. Prosit Roy (Paatal Lok) directs the film from a script by Abhishek Banerjee (Tanlines), marking Sharma’s comeback film after her long maternity break.
Chakda’ Express BTS trailer doesn’t reveal much except some random production clips and B-roll footage of Jhulan, played by Sharma, practicing on the pitch. Director Roy then narrates the setting of Chada ‘Express’, detailing her journey from the small town of Chakdaha, West Bengal to the 2017 World Cup finals. There are brief glimpses of Sharma in Short Hair , which depicts Jhulan as a child — a tomboy of sorts — mimicking bowling techniques in the spare time she gets at home.
“We are trying to capture the raw energy of Zhulan and try to be as true to the story as possible,” he added. There is also a point when the real-life Jhulan Goswami appears on the sets, guiding Sharma in character portrayal and on-field techniques. Besides popularizing women’s cricket in India, Goswami also held the world record for most wickets in a nineteen-year international career from 2002 to 2021.
Netflix had released one Announcement trailer For Chakda’ Express earlier this year, which featured the dire situation of the Indian women’s cricket team. The stadium was empty, there were no individual jerseys and it highlighted the oversaturation of male spectators/fans in the game. If cricket is a religion, why are men gods? A tagline appeared at the end of the trailer.
“When Jhulan decided to become a cricketer and make her country proud at the global stage, it was very difficult for women to think about playing the game,” Sharma had said in a prepared statement earlier. “The film is a dramatic retelling of the many events that shaped her life and women’s cricket.” Anushka is producing Chakda Express with her brother Karnesh Sharma under their banner Clean Slate Films.
Currently, there is no release window for Netflix’s Chakda’ Xpress.
