A ticket to paradise

When: October 6
Where: Cinema

After their troubled romance in Ocean’s Eleven, George Clooney and Julia Roberts reunite in this rom-com as a divorced couple who travel to Bali to crash their daughter’s wedding. Or more specifically, prevent her from making the same mistake they did 25 years ago. To play devil’s advocate here, Lily’s (Caitlin Dever) parents have every right to worry, as their precious daughter is about to marry a local, Gede (Maxime Beautier), whom she has just met.

And so, putting their differences aside, the pair called a truce in hopes of tricking her into tricking the man. This will include drastic measures like pocketing the wedding rings, showing him in poor light and most importantly, maintaining a non-aggressive relationship throughout the journey. A good reference point would be Adam Sandler’s 2014 film, Blended, which saw an unlikely middle-aged couple bonded over the course of a vacation by the fun activities that plague such exotic tourist destinations.

Ol’ Parker — best known for the musical comedy Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again — Ticket to Paradise directs, so perhaps we can expect some stellar dance sequences with licensed TikTok-ish music.

This is another wedding-themed title. A devout housewife’s public image is damaged when a new rumor threatens to destroy her son’s wedding plans. Pallavi Patel (Madhuri Dixit) is a classy, middle-aged woman, as infamous for her garba dancing skills as she is for her cooking. When her son Tejas (Ritvik Bhowmik) brings home a proposal to marry a rich, non-resident Indian girl, all the attention in Baroda is on the middle-class family. Despite financial difficulties, the father-in-law (Rajit Kapoor) agrees to the marriage, as he is in love with Pallavi and can continue seeing her.

While not clearly stated, the Maja Maa trailer hints that a sexually suggestive video has surfaced online on the eve of the party, causing turmoil between the two families. Considering that the American father-in-law was clearly sexually attracted to Pallavi, the plans to call off the engagement are accelerated, which is odd. Director Anand Tiwari – the star of Go Goa Gone – bases this struggle as the core of the story, as Dixit’s housewife competes with social norms and establishes her own identity. Neighbors have not imposed on her.

Gajraj Rao, Barkha Singh, Srishti Srivastava, Sheeba Chadha and Simon Singh play the lead roles for Maja Maa.

female king

When: October 14
Where: Cinema

Known for her commanding personality, Davis plays General Naniska, leading the all-female warrior tribe of the Agoji against enemies who violate their honor, threaten to enslave their people and destroy everything they’ve built. Set in 1800s West Africa, this historical drama chronicles the rise of her unit, as it prepares for an all-out war against the Oyo Empire, known to Europeans for trading slaves.

Actress Maria Bello (Lights Out) came up with the idea for The Woman King after visiting Benin, where the Kingdom of Dahomey used to be. Teaming up with Dana Stevens (Fatherhood), she put together a story in 2015, only to be turned down by several studios due to financial concerns — understandable, given the cost of costumes and makeup to simulate an actual army of warriors. This is the second team-up for Davis and Bellow, who previously starred as concerned mothers in Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners.

Directed by Prince-Bythewood, most of the lead lineup is filled with women, except for John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), who plays Gezo, ruler of Dahomey. The film also stars Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Etim, Jaime Lawson and Adrienne Warren.

Double XL

When: October 14
Where: Cinema

The social comedy stars Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi (Army of the Dead), two plus-size women who navigate society’s beauty standards, body-shaming culture and female friendship. Double XL, filmed extensively in India and the UK, attempts to poke fun at expectations of both male and female body types, talking about topics such as bra sizes, thin waists, and childhood insults.

Salman Khan’s frequent co-star Satram Ramani directs the film from a script written by Mudassar Aziz and Sasha Singh. The film also stars Zaheer Iqbal, Karis Pentecost, Seena Mommsen, Sankalp Gupta and K Iluvian in supporting roles.

Doctor G

When: October 14
Where: Cinema

Uday Gupta (Ayushmann Khurrana), a medical college student, reluctantly finds himself the lone man in the gynecology department. Wanting to major in orthopedics, he finds himself in the middle of confusion, ridicule, and occasional ragging from his fellow classmates. This is on top of the judgmental looks he gets from patients and nurses who aren’t used to seeing a male gyno. The saving grace comes in the form of his teacher (Shefali Shah, Delhi Crime), who advises Uday to change his mindset and “lose the male touch.”

Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, Doctor Ji changes Uday’s thinking as he deals with tender diagnostic methods, a romance with Rakul Preet Singh, and struggling couples whose husbands can’t find the right hole. Kashyap conceptualized the script with Saurabh Bharat and Sumit Savexa, the latter of whom had previously written Karan Johar’s part in Lust Stories.

Where: Cinema

Enslaved and imprisoned in Kahandak for 5,000 years, Teth-Adam awakens in the modern world, as the incarnation of Black Adam, as Hell to reveal his unique form of justice. Harnessing the almighty powers of ancient Egyptian gods, the free-spirited anti-hero battles the Justice Society, unleashing lightning strikes and killing anyone who crosses his path.

The film enters Dwayne Johnson’s superhero genre, reuniting with director Jaume Collet-Serra – the two previously worked on Disney’s Jungle Cruise.

black adam It will be the first feature film to explore Superman’s dark, lightning-honing nemesis with the JSA. Starring Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, the organization has another personality – Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who has now established herself in a recurring canon role in the DC Extended Universe.

The film was originally slated for a 2021 release, but the pandemic delayed the timeline. Black Adam also stars Quintessa Swindell as the wind-powered Hurricane and Noah Centineo as the Atom Smasher, capable of manipulating his atomic structure at will. At this point, we can only wish for Zachary Levi’s Shazam to make a cameo. That would be fun!

Ram Setu

When: October 25
Where: Cinema

In a quest to save the eponymous Ram Setu, an atheist archaeologist turned believer (Akshay Kumar) embarks on an action-packed odyssey through hostile jungles, secret tunnels and star trails submerged deep in the ocean.

According to the epic Ramayana, the legendary limestone bridge was built by Lord Rama’s army in an attempt to reach Sri Lanka and rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of the demon king Ravana. Starring Jacqueline Fernandez as an eponymous character, the film focuses on his quest to prove its existence and provide evidence through research that its structure is man-made.

Nushrat Bharucha and Satyadev Kancharana also join the quest in undisclosed roles.
