This year, the award goes to the Somali human rights activists Fartuun Adan and Ilwad Elman, the Ukrainian Olexandra Matwijtschuk and the Center for Civil Liberties (CCL) as well as the Venezuelan collective Cecosesola for social justice and the Ugandan organization Africa Institute for Energy Governance AFIEGO, the fight against land grabbing and environmental destruction. This was announced by the director of the Right Livelihood Foundation, Ole von Uexküll, in Stockholm. The 2022 award winners will be honored for their commitment to peace, human rights, social justice and environmental protection.

The Foundation’s prize, which has been awarded since 1980, is officially called the Right Livelihood Award, but is more commonly known as the Alternative Nobel Prize. It was created in 1980 by the German-Swedish philatelist and publicist Jakob von Uexküll and is always awarded a few days before the actual Nobel Prizes are announced. Previous winners include the Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege, the US whistleblower Edward Snowden and the Afghan women’s rights activist Sima Samar.
