Government Reportedly Asks Amazon to Remove Seatbelt Alarm Blockers Following Cyrus Mistry Car Crash

Amazon has been asked by India’s Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to stop selling seatbelt alarm blockers in the country. The conversation on road safety has intensified after the recent death of Indian tycoon Cyrus Mistry in a car accident. The crash appears to be under scrutiny for wider road safety issues, including seatbelt alarm blockers and other such devices. Interestingly, the sale of metal clips that act as seatbelt alarm blockers is not considered illegal in India.

According to Reuters, Gadkari discussed road safety issues in a recent interview. Metal clips available on Amazon can be inserted into seatbelt slots to prevent alarms from going off while driving, he pointed out.

Gadkari revealed that the government has sent a notice to Amazon to stop selling such metal clips on its online store.

Such clips are available at very low prices on Amazon. 249. According to reports, Mistry was not wearing a seatbelt when his car crashed.

Gadkari informed that about 150,000 deaths will occur in India due to vehicle accidents in 2021. Moreover, the government plans to make seatbelts mandatory for the rear seats as well.
