5G service rollout expected ‘soon’, target for all-India coverage in 2 years, says IT minister

5G Services Rollout Expected

5G telecom services in India will be launched soon and the government aims to cover the entire country within 2 years, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said at an event on Sunday.

India is gearing up for the rollout of 5G services by October, the minister had earlier said.

The government issued spectrum allocation letters to telecom service providers in mid-August and asked them to prepare for the rollout of 5G services.

With this spectrum allocation, India is in the final stages of rolling out high-speed 5G telecom services.

Reliance Jio has already announced that it will launch high-speed 5G telecom services in several major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai by Diwali this year. After that, it intends to expand its 5G network to every city, tehsil and taluk across the country by December of 2023, which is almost 18 months from now.

What is 5G and how does it differ from current 3G and 4G services?

5G is a fifth generation mobile network capable of transmitting large sets of data at very high speeds.

Compared to 3G and 4G, 5G has very low latency which will enhance user experience in various fields. Low latency describes the efficiency of processing very large data messages with minimal latency.

The 5G rollout is expected to further develop remote data monitoring in areas such as mining, warehousing, telemedicine and manufacturing.

Who participated in the auction?

The four major participants in the spectrum auction are Reliance Jio, Adani Group, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

How much revenue did the government get from the auction?

A total of Rs. 1.50 lakh crore from the recently concluded auction. From the auction initially Rs. 80,000-90,000 crore.

Speed:

5G services are expected to be around 10 times faster than 4G.

Exit:

High-speed 5G telecommunication services are expected to be offered in several cities in the county by the end of 2022.
